Building Community in Two Countries

Union Allegro began with a simple hope: that small acts of kindness could ripple outward and change lives, one gesture at a time.

Our Story

From a small gesture to a binational bridge

Union Allegro began in 2019, born from a simple act of solidarity: helping a local soup kitchen in Torreón, Mexico feed migrants passing through on their journey north. That soup kitchen, Comedor Santa Cecilia, became the seed from which everything else grew. What started as a small gesture has become a binational bridge between two communities and a mission to support migrants wherever they are, while Torreón remains where we work on the ground.

Today, our work is sustained almost entirely by the generosity of donors in Germany. Their support pays for meals, medicine, and transportation to shelters and hospitals — and without it, this project could not continue.

Our Community

The people who make it possible

None of this would be possible without Irma, who has led Comedor Santa Cecilia's daily operations with extraordinary dedication — recognized by the Civic Engagement Association as one of the city's top 10 community leaders.

We've also built a growing partnership with local high schools and universities, whose students volunteer their time every weekend, and with neighbors and local organizations who've become part of our support network in Torreón.

Why It Matters

Meeting people where the gap is largest

Migration through Mexico has reached historic levels — with millions of people crossing the U.S.–Mexico border corridor each year, many from Central America, and, increasingly, from Venezuela and other South American and Caribbean countries fleeing economic collapse and political instability. Mexico's own systems are often stretched far beyond capacity.

Comedor Santa Cecilia exists to meet people exactly where the gap is largest — offering dignity, a hot meal, and support at one of the most difficult moments of their journey.

Looking Ahead

Growing with the needs of the people we serve

We're currently working to open a dedicated space for medical and legal attention at the comedor, deepen our partnerships with universities and NGOs, and continue building the local network of support that has made this work possible. As the needs of migrants keep evolving, so will we — always with the same goal: making sure that migrants, wherever they are, do not go without food, care, or dignity, starting with everyone who passes through Torreón.
